Help Me Pick Out A Vacation Destination?
This summer has been busy… and seems to get busier by the day. I haven’t been able to take a day of vacation in nearly two years and figure a few days of R&R (and of course some fly fishing) are long overdue. After checking the weather forcast for the next few days:
I’ve decided the vacation is definitely necessary. With only minimal time on the water the past couple weeks and a predicted lousy week and half coming up… It’s time to get outa here for a while.
THANKFULLY, Reese and I have access to some frequent flyer miles that need to be burned. I’m not the most accomplished traveler around… so I thought this would be a good oppurtunity to tap into the collective experience of everyone reading out there.
These are the options:
What do you think? I’ll definitely be looking for some fun water to fish, but having things to for Reese to enjoy (other than fishing!) will be just as important!! We’re thinking Aug 1-8th will work out the best schedule-wise. Can’t wait to hear your advice!

Welcome to Ward Wulf’s blog and Oklahoma fly fishing website -- A great source for OKC Metro (and beyond!) fishing reports and discussions.

I would head down to the Tampa Bay area. Find a resort on the beach, Reese can enjoy soaking up some rays and you can chase snook on the beach!
Pacific Northwest.
Ugh…who wants to go to florida for august? Prob not any worse than OK though i guess.
Great Lakes salmon start running in august (usually later in the month, but with the cool weather and lots of rain so far, they might be showing up a little early), and there are hundreds of options for things to do around lakes M and O. Central NY has a very decent wine production and lots of vinyards to tour.
I’d love to go PNW some day. Some great fishing not too far from portland.
Tons to do around Denver, good fishing, and a great city.
Norfolk or New England for beaches and saltwater fishing.
There’s always the big apple. Short drive from the most storied FF waters in america.
I think you have too many options. Make a list of places you’d like to go and let her make the ultimate decision. If, for some inconceivable reason, you head to Albany, give me a shout and i’ll put you on a brookie stream and you can hook me up with some carp.
Obviously, someone has never fished for snook a long the beach. Florida is not all that bad in August, hell the heat and weather should be the norm for living in our area. (TX, OK)
I think the PNW would be great for a trip by yourself, but Reese might find herself a little bored.
It’s such a tough call…
I’ve wanted to catch snook ever since I saw salt water fishin’ shows on espn as a little kid. I’m worried about catching bad weather though. Too worried about being stuck inside and becoming restless!!
The PNW is really tempting too. Reese has been out to Seattle before and loved it (I’ve never been). It seems like Cali will have more options though…
Ed, you’re makin me think hard about east coast options though… I had been focusing my attention westward, hadn’t really considered NY. I know Reese would love it, but I just don’t know if I could handle it. Big cities STRESS me out.
Right now I’m thinkin’ maybe fly into San Fran, spend a couple days in Napa checkin’ out wine country, then heading over to the Yosemite area for a few days of fishing/hiking/sight seeing, then maybe even going up to the Tahoe area and maybe fishing the Truckee or Little Truckee. I’m starting to hear those water temps might be too warm though. We could fly out of Reno so we wouldn’t have to backtrack too much.
TOUGH call… fun challenge!
Sounds like you got your itinerary! I dont think anybody is gonna beat what you listed. Still jealous that I never made it to Yosemite with the rest of my family for my uncles wedding.
Ward, Sounds like you have a good problem! Just don’t forget the camera wherever it is.
